Week in Tuscany with kids

We will be visiting Tuscany for a week with a twelve and six year old. Plan to visit Florence, couple of days on the beach, splash around in the pool, wander around some of the villages, go for a few walks, buy and cook some of the local produce and the like. We will hire a car. Not sure whether we should stay near the beach or nearer Florence in the Chianti area. In terms of the beach we have found a nice(ish) farmhouse near Pombino, which we though could put us in driving distance of a variety of beaches. Don't want anything too grand such as Viareggio. Found a couple of places half an hour south of Florence. Finally, we thought maybe a halfway house in a farmhouse, completely off the beaten track, near Paganico. Help!

a week with kids along the Tuscan coast

Ciao gManLondon,

I know, the possibilities are definitely overwhelming! Every single area of Tuscany has its charms and its numerous farmhouses that give you a chance to enjoy the countryside, good food, outdoor fun by the pool and more.

With kids, I'd suggest staying closer to the coast, such as near Piombino. You can still reach many places within driving distance inland, including Florence, but being close to the beached will also give you a chance to include some relaxing fun days under the sun rather than the "more adult" activities of wine and food and village exploration. Actually the coast also has all of these possibilities without detracting from the Tuscan experience.

Take a look at some of the villages you can visit along the coast here: http://www.discovertuscany.com/the-etruscan-coast/

Actually a very good reason to stay close to the coast when you have kids is this:

The area near Paganico is beautiful, but definitely a bit more isolated and thus requires a little more driving to reach some places, including Florence. For that reason I'd suggest a little bit further north right around the area you first suggest.
