car vs. no car

Hi everyone... I will be flying into Rome in mid-September for 1 week, but want to stay near the Arezzo area. Ideally, I would LOVE to stay in a hilltop village and be able to drive around to small towns and take trains/bus into cities when necessary. My dilemma is: how much will the tolls on the autostrada cost from Rome to Valdarno exit run me, and also, how much is the gasoline running these days? I appreciate any advise.... thanks much.

Ciao annie!

The Autostrade website, the company that manages the large toll roads in Italy, actually has a great tool that maps your trip and tells you the cost of the toll roads.

From Rome Fiumicino to Valdarno it tells me it would take about 3 hours and cost euro 12,20.

You can map other trips here: http://www.autostrade.it/autostrade/percorso.do
Unfortunately it is only in Italian but I don't think you should have trouble using it. Partenza is your starting point, Arrivo your end point.

Gas at the moment is around euro 1,14 per liter here in Florence.

Thanks so much

for your response. I just made reservations to stay in Loro Ciuffenna..... so excited to see and experience Tuscany. Ciao!
