Public transport from San Gimignano to Rome
I'm trying to decide between taking a day trip to San Gimignano from Florence and staying overnight in San Gimignano. If I stay in SG, how would I travel to Rome without returning to Florence? Bus, train, both? Any advice is welcome.

If you are taking a day trip to San Gimignano you may decide to join a guided group tour by bus or reach San Gimignano on own by SITA bus departing close to the Santa Maria Novella Train station:
From Florence to San Gimignano you will have to change in Poggibonsi.
The Bus company that organized the sevice Florence-Siena is called SITA
If you wish to stay in San Gimignano for a night, you will have to catch another bus to Siena the following morning and then another one from Siena to Rome. I am attaching you the bus company website:
I would honestly avoid travelling by bus and having to change several times along the way...if you are travelling with luggage it can be very hard and painful mostly in Siena where the bus companies have different departures.
I would honestly get back to Florence and take an easy train connection into Rome.
Have a wonderful stay! A presto, elena

Thank you for the information, Elena. I think I've decided to stay overnight in Siena and going to SG from there. Then I'll take the bus from Siena to Rome.

I agree, it would make better sense to use Siena as a base since you're heading south - and from there visit SG and then head on down to Rome. Siena is beautiful, I am sure you will love it!

You will love Siena by night! You will enjoy it only with a few locals, students sipping an Aperitivo in Piazza del Campo and a fabulous quiet atmosphere! A presto, Elena
