July 8 to July15 Castiglion Fibocchi (AR) - Italy

We have booked an apartment in Castiglion Fibocchi and we will have a rental car. A few years ago, we spent a week in Umbria, and loved living among the locals. We spent our days visiting nearby villages, and most evenings, we did simple cooking in our apartment. We hope to do the same in Tuscany. We have visited Florence in the past, so probably won't want to go there for more than (perhaps) one day. Otherwise, we are looking for places to visit near where we are staying. We just saw the Movie "Under Tuscan Sun", so we want to visit Cortona, but we don't know what else is in the area, and what things there are to see there. We are photographers, and like shooting pictures of local life, and culture. We would appreciate any suggestions of inexpensive lunch places, and interesting things to see and do.

lots to see in the area - to the south, west and east :)

Ciao!

You are in the perfect area for going to see Cortona where "Under the Tuscan Sun" is set.
July is a perfect month as there are many summer events going on all over in most of Tuscany in every village, small and large.

As for places to head to in the area to the south:
Arezzo for sure
Cortona
Sansepolcro
Anghiari
Monterchi
Castiglion Fiorentino
Montepulciano
Pienza, San Quirico, Montalcino - in the Val d'Orcia

to the north-east:
head into the Casentino valley and visit the hermitage of Camaldoli
Chiusi della Verna
the castle of Poppi

to the north:
Loro Ciuffena
and the area of Le Balze around Castelfranco di Sopra
Vallombrosa

to the west:
Siena and the area of Chianti :)

As for inexpensive lunch places, there are so many in each town it is really hard to make lists.
Each town usually has a range of nicer restaurants to more informal trattorias - I always recommend asking locals for their recommendations, you'll get reviews of their favorites :)
they will also tell you wish ones are more inexpensive or good value for quality/quantity!

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of information I've been looking for.
