My husband and I together with our 2 children aged 13 & 8. Will be traveling from Rome to Venice in April next year. We would like to spend a week in Tuscany exploring the wonderful countryside using only public transport. We have been told by our travel agent that we have to hire a car. We are reluctant to hire a car and would like to stay in a country hotel or retreat with self catering apartments. Using only public transport or bikes to se Pisa, San Gniano and also Lucca. Please help us find the correct accomodation to make our stay unforgettable . Regards Annie South Africa

Traveling with Public Transport

Buongiorno,

Your travel agent is aware of the problems that can arise when you try to work your way through a region as large and diverse as Tuscany. Not that it is impossible, but definitely more convenient.

Having said that, if you want to be able to travel easily to other destinations, then your best bet is to base yourself in a city/town that has easy access to public transport - and in Tuscany that would mean your number one choice is Florence, followed by Siena and maybe Pisa.

But just because I suggest a large city doesn't mean that there aren't accommodation options that won't allow you to enjoy the "great outdoors". Have a look at this link for some lodging ideas:

http://www.florenceaccommodation.com/torre-a-cona.html - this has a bus stop by the structure, so you can get to Florence easy, and it is a good starting place for bike rides.
http://www.florenceaccommodation.com/mami-haus.html - this is in the city, but it is a great position for a family and access to public transport
http://www.florenceaccommodation.com/villa-tolomei-hotel-and-resort.html - outside the city walls, but close enough to walk or even take a taxi

Buon Viaggio,
