We will be in Tuscany for the month of October...staying in a cottage near Cortona. We will have a car. What festivals or sagres should we try to attend during our stay?

Festivals and Events in Tuscany for October 2011

Welcome to our forum Dona!
Cortona is one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany, and thanks to its very high location atop a hill, probably the one with the best panoramic view!

Regarding events and festivals taking place right in Cortona for the next October 2011, you may consider “San Francesco a Cortona” until the 3rd of October, characterized by a series of celebrations on occasion of the 8th centenary of the famous Italian Saint.
Until the 10th of October, always in Cortona, you can assist the “10th Pipe Organ Show”, a concert to promote good local music at the beautiful Roman villa of Ossaia.

As you will have a car, and Cortona is right on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, you can take note of the following events and festivals taking place in Umbria. I especially recommend the famous Eurochocolate in Perugia from 14 to 23 of October, a great event all dedicated to chocolate, where the streets of Perugia will be literally full of chocolate! Not to be missed!
Among other main events in Umbria I suggest the “Umbria Jazz Winter” in Orvieto, the festival dedicated to the white truffle and other local products in Gubbio, and the “Giostra dell'Arme” in Sangemini. You can find a complete list of Umbrian events in October at this link.

As for events and festivals in Tuscany, you will find a lot dedicated to the typical products of the season, such as the chestnut, the white truffle, the mushrooms, the wine and so on. Many of them take place in the beautiful Valdorcia region south of Siena, that you can easily reach from Cortona. One I recommend is the Autumn Festival of Abbadia San Salvatore, where you can taste a lot of typical and delicious local products, and the Sagra del Fungo e della Castagna (the mushroom and chestnut fair) in Vivo d’Orcia, where you can taste traditional dishes at the many enogastronomic stalls, and enjoy a series of other attractions like the Antiques Fair, Arts and Crafts, and the Palio del Boscaiolo.

You can have a look at the main annual events taking place in Tuscany at this link; while here you can check the calendar of events in Tuscany.

Enjoy your Italian trip :)
Ciao from Florence!
