Do we really need a car?

We will be staying in Chianciano Terme for about 2 weeks, and would like to make day trips to Siena and to Florence. We would also like to visit other Tuscan towns and villages. Can this be done using local buses and trains, or will we need a car while in Tuscany?

a car would be useful but not required from your location...

Ciao Frank,

If you don't want to drive, you definitely could manage to get around with bus and train from Chianciano Terme - take the bus to Chiusi and hop on the train to Florence.
There is also a bus to Siena but it takes 130-150 minutes! Many stops, with bus change in Montepulciano.
You can check the timetables for both here: http://www.busfox.com/timetable/
and for trains here: http://www.trenitalia.com

So it is doable - but if you want to forget about meeting specific times for buses or trains, renting a car is just simply easier!

For other locations, it might get more difficult to use public transport - it all depends on where your holiday vacation rental is at! if it is in the middle of the countryside kilometers outside of a town, you first have to walk to the town before catching the bus! just something to keep in mind :)

Thank you, Lourdes! I think we will rent a car to see the local sites, and to get to Chiusi to take the trains to Rome, Siena and Florence.

It depend on your destination.Every person wants to have a pleasant and hassle free vacation and I think car hire is the safe and wise source.

If you want to visit each destination of Tuscany then I think the car will be good instead of traveling in local buses.
