My wife & I plan to visit Florence (from AUSTRALIA ) for 1 week from 19th. December.
Can you supply the same sort of information for the xmas period, what activities/parades are held at this period?

Also can you advise opening days for supermarkets/shops . ( we will be staying in an apartment )

more importantly what are the opening days for MERCANTO CENTRALE & the SAN LORENZO MARKET.

Buongiorno,

Christmas is such a magical time to visit Florence - it really is a great moment to live more of the Italian "culture" while enjoying the art, architecture and history.

Here are two articles that were written for Christmas 2015 but they give you an idea of what is happening on a general bases:

I've been told that the Market San Lorenzo -- NEVER closes! so you can still do lots of shopping. As for the stores and such in the city center (and Tuscany in general) they normally close early on Christmas Eve .... Christmas is normally CLOSED for everyone - and the day after Christmas (Santo Stefano) a bit of a hit or miss, but you will always find something open. As for restaurants, some close - some don't but you will find places to eat.

Here is a list of Christmas markets that you can check out as well while in Tuscany:
