Hi, I am planning a day trip Rome to Florence by train. Is there a public transportation from the train station to city center or the most seen historic center? What is the must see site, including the museum and the historic site? what is the latest time the express train departure from Florence to Rome?

Thanks a lot!

You can check train timetables directly on the Trenitalia website: www.trenitalia.com

You can do a day trip from Rome since trains have become fast -- the main train station in Florence is called Santa Maria Novella and it is in the heart of Florence's historical center so as soon as you walk out, you can already start seeing the attractions.

Head toward Piazza del Duomo (where you'll find the cathedral, baptistery, bell tower) and plan your day between that area and Piazza della Signoria (where you can see Palazzo Vecchio). Head towards Ponte Vecchio. The Uffizi Gallery is right next to Palazzo Vecchio, it is one of Florences (and Italy's) most visited museums so I would recommend you pre-book tickets so you have a reserved time for entrance and skip any lines. It makes your day more efficient in Florence. But if you're not a major art person, you can skip spending too much time indoors and walk around, Florence itself it an open air museum and you can enjoy walking around -- Florence is small and very walkable. Make your way to Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Piazza Pitti and Piazza Santo Spirito and you'll have seen more of the city's monuments, at least from the outside. It all depends on your interests whether you want to go it and spend time there - and less time outdoors!
