What is open on May Day (May 1) 2018?

Hello!

My wife and I are visiting Florence for the first time, arriving on April 30th. I hear a lot of things may be closed because it is a public holiday? What is open? Are restaurants open?

Would love some advice for things to see and do and where to eat on May Day!

Thank you!

Tim

Most of the important museums are closed - http://www.imuseidifirenze.it/orari-musei-firenze/ In Italian but 1 maggio (i.e. May 1) indicates which are closed. Palazzo Strozzi is, I understand, open.

One event taking place on May 1 - and it is free - is the Trofeo Marzocco in Piazza della Signoria which is a traditional flag throwing competition - http://www.firenzetoday.it/eventi/trofeo-marzocco-1-maggio-2018.html

Restaurants and many smaller touristy shops will be open. As far as suggestions are concerned where will you be staying in Florence?

Ciao Tim,
As others have said, most museums will be closed, including the Uffizi and Accademia, but the Palazzo Strozzi, with its temporary exhibits, will be open.

You will find most restaurants open but many shops will also close.

You should plan to spend most of the day outdoors, which in Florence still means seeing a lot.
There are many walking tours, check some here:

You can also just remain flexible and do your own waking tour around the center and up to the Piazzale Michelangelo, planning for a picnic for lunch to be outdoors. Here are some ideas for itineraries
