Moving around in Florence

Hi My wife and I will be in florence for three days, we would love to see as much as possible, but my wife has a slight walking disability, she can walk for about 2 kms slowly but needs a rest and then can walk on for another 2kms or a bit. Any suggestions of how we can get around florence. Where should we stay so we can be close to the museums and other sights. Also does CINQUE TERRE TOUR require a lot of walking or are there rest stops along the way? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you Paul

Getting around

Buongiorno,

Florence is very accessible by foot, since the major monuments and museums, churches and restaurants are all in a pretty concentrated area. If she can get around for 2 km - then she will certainly be able to manage the city center of Florence in small doses. However, you could consider a Hop-on Hop-off tour, or another type of guided tour with transport in the city center. You can also make use of the local bus (ATAF), I use to get around when I need to get to the center, and it is (pretty) reliable.

This article may give you some insight to alternatives: http://www.visitflorence.com/moving-around-florence/physical-disability.html

As for Cinque Terre, there can be quite a bit of walking involved - even if you use the train to go in and out of the area. My colleagues have reviewed a tour - which may be a good possibility:

Accommodations in this area will keep you very central:

However, if you have some difficulty getting around you may want to double check that the lodgings have an elevator - remember these are normally pretty old buildings and it is not a guarantee that there is ALWAYS an elevator, however when you are talking about the museums, most are ready to handle people with difficulty getting around.

Buon Viaggio,
