Hi there!

I will reach the big three score and ten this year (Gulp) and I have always wanted to go to Florence but never made it.

I am delighted to say, myself and my (older) friend have just booked a week in Florence at the end of March. I am a mobility scooter user. Although I can walk, I have no endurance. Can anyone make any suggestions of how to make our trip the best possible, please? Are there things I can do in advance to help overcome obstacles?

The top of my list is to see the statue of David with my own eyes and a peek inside Il Duomo.

Anything you suggest that is accessible will be a bonus after that!

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanking you for any advice you offer.

Yours truly,

Mary

Update
Since posting, I have been in touch with Sala Blu Firenze who have been extreme prompt and courteous in Their response. They have arranged to meet me in Pisa Railway Station and escort me to and from the city! Couldn’t be more impressed and gives me hope for further rail journeys whilst I’m there. Hope this will be of assistance to other disabled travellers.

Hi Mary,

I think you will have a wonderful birthday in Italy, regardless of the number you're turning ;)

First off, will you be traveling with your own scooter or also need to look into renting one while here?

Most sights are accessible, just know that some streets in Florence and around Italy can be "bumpy" - there are still many stone streets that are not exactly smooth. But there are many wide sidewalks in the downtown area that are smooth and will be fine for navigating between sights. Have you already booked accommodation in Florence? As long as you make sure your place has an elevator that fits your scooter, you should do fine. Make sure to let them know and ask about size, you don't want to arrive and discover it is too small or not convenient for use.

The David is at the Accademia, which is definitely accessible and so is the Duomo. I would also suggest visiting the Baptistery and the Museo dell'Opera (which are in the same pass). Do you actually have a registered disability or not? Just to let you know that if you do, many sites will give free entrance to disabled visitors provided you show proof of disability (like a placard from back home).

We are happy to provide more info, take a look at the itineraries and sights we mention here for ideas of what to see and if you have questions about how to get around, ask and we will help clear up any doubts!
