we are a family of 5 -couple with 3 daughters, ages 12, 17 & 24. we are arriving florence by train from venice at about 5pm in early april. we will only be staying in venice for 2 days. first day (next day after we arrive), we plan to get the hop on hop off bus tour around the city. 2nd day will be a road trip to pisa and sienna. just wondering what we can do in the late afternoon-early evening after we have checked in at First of Florence. any suggestions?

Roam around the historical center and enjoy gelato!

Ciao Maria,

You likely mean that you're in Florence for only two days (you wrote Venice). Since you're spending one full day on the hop-on, hop-off bus going around Florence and the other day in Pisa and Siena, the first evening you might consider taking it really easy - you arrive at 5pm and then need to go to your hotel and check-in, there really isn't that much time to DO much aside from dinner.

I'd highly recommend just walking around the area between Duomo and Piazza della Signoria and Ponte Vecchio especially since you won't be seeing any of this from the hop-on, hop-off bus!! This area is off limits to traffic and the bus will take you literally around the historical center and you'll get amazing views of the city. So spend all your other time exploring the small streets of the center, go to the outdoor San Lorenzo market and do some shopping of traditional items from Florence - hand-painted marbled paper, leather jackets and purses and belts, ceramics and silk scarves :)

You'll see, the time will fly by and you'll wish you had more time in Florence! You practically won't have time to see any museums so enjoy the time seeing the outside of the many palaces and squares that are themselves masterpieces! So enjoy a nice dinner, eat some gelato and enjoy seeing Florence :)
