Urgent help needed -- 7 days in Tuscany starting now! No car!

Buongiorno

I'm new to this so thank you in advice for any help!

I am in Siena now, for one night (my room isn't available tomorrow). I then have a further 7 (or, at a push, 8) nights in Tuscany and nothing booked from tomorrow onwards!!!

Ideally, from tomorrow I'd like to spend 4 (or 5) nights in one place... Somewhere I can use as a base to travel by bus and train, ideally quite relaxed. Those are the priorities: easy access and peaceful. Then I will spend the last 3 nights in Florence.

Background is; I started 2 weeks ago in southern italy, came up through Lazio and was due to spend a week with a friend, who is now no longer able to join me. I know it's late to book accommodation, but - while suggestions are welcome! - I will find something and I'm not worried. More concerned about location...

I would like to visit:
Chianti region
Arezzo
San gimignani
Pistoia (which I suppose might be easier after Florence)
(Have i missed anywhere key? I have been to Lucca and Pisa in the past.)

Found a great map, here: http://goitaly.about.com/library/bl_tuscany_rail_maps.htm and also read some of the advice on this (excellent!) site.

But, can anyone suggest a good base for me? Montepuciano? Poggibonsi? Castellina? Somewhere else? Please help!

Grazie tanti mille!

Recommend Arezzo, Pistoia or Poggibonsi as they are along train lines

Ciao Adhoc,

My first suggestion would be to stay in Siena for a few more days (I know the Palio is coming up and the town is busy but you might find something for 2 nights a bit further from the center? take a look here:
http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/siena-accommodation/
- just zoom in to the map to look at hotels closer to the train station, not center).

And then move on to Florence but I see you're already planning some nights in Florence... and seeing as you've been to Pisa and Lucca, my next suggestion is to head to Arezzo or Pistoia from Siena before heading to Florence.
I'd choose Arezzo, since as a base it would be better to see the area around there (including Cortona and Montepulciano).

The main reason: you have no car and want to use public transport.
You can't easily reach Castellina and the medieval towns in Chianti without a car or with public transport - Poggibonsi and San Gimignano are further possibilities and while you can reach the first by train and the second by bus, they aren't great bases to use to them move around using solely public transport (aside from Poggibonsi).

And since you need someplace fast, I suggest you look at hotels and B&Bs with immeditate online availability - the above link for Siena and this one for Arezzo:
http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/arezzo-accommodation/
so that you can already find and book a place for your next few nights!!

Hope you're enjoying Siena as it prepares for the Palio!! :)
