Rent car in Rome or Siena?

Ciao!

We are planning our first trip to Italy for October and will be arriving in Rome (4 days) then spending 5 nights at La Fornace di Racciano (www.lafornacediracciano.it) outside of San Gimignano. We want to rent a car for our time in Tuscany, but would appreciate any advice on what location to pick up our rental (we've heard the nightmares about driving in/near Rome!).

Also, we will be heading to Lake Como after Tuscany, so any advice on whether we should drive to Milan and train to Como or drop the car in Como is appreciated.

Many thanks!

Since you're in Rome, you could take the train to Siena (changing trains in Chiusi if you don't want to pass through Florence) and rent the car there.

The car rental agencies in Siena for Herzt and Avis are the closest to the train station, all within a few blocks.

You can take a look at rates on here to start your search:

Of course, the train ride itself is 3.5 to over 4 hours, which is more than the car ride from Rome might take to get directly to your farmhouse. So if you feel like driving up from Rome, you could just plan to head out of Rome back toward the Fiumicino airport and pick up your car there - and then take the SS1 Aurelia road up along the coast which is near Fiumicino rather than head back to the ring road that circles Rome.

As far as Como, how many days and are you planning to move around the car? If so, I'd keep the car and use it to move around. But if you're planning to arrive there and enjoy the lake area without moving around too much, I'd leave the car in Milan and then just use train or buses to move around the lake.
