Tuscany without a car

We will be flying to Pisa from Paris next month, have reservations for 4 nights in Lucca and 5 nights in Sienna then on to Rome. Plan to use public transportation to get around.
Need advice on:
1) easiest way to get from Pisa Airport to Verdi Square in Lucca.
2) easiest way to get from Lucca to Piazza del Campo in Siena
3) easiest way to get from Siena to the Villa Borghese in Rome.

Ideas for easy day trips are also greatly appreciated.

Ciao Echoy217,

Tuscany's public transportation isn't great in terms of connections and times but you can definitely do your itinerary with some planning!
I highly recommend you use the new Google Maps to map out your itinerary - I've been testing it out and it has a very good integration with local timetables for buses as well as trains :)

1. From Pisa Airport, you could either take a bus to Lucca (direct with either P731 or R008) or take the train to Pisa Centrale, then another train to Lucca. Once in Lucca, Piazzale Verdi is just little more than a 1km from the station - you could take a bus (17-52-54-56-58-60) or a taxi if you have several pieces of luggage.

2. From Lucca, take the train to Siena. Most of the options will have you pass through Pisa Centrale with train change in Empoli. All solutions will take 2.5-3 hours to accomplish, depending on when you leave and connections you meet.

3. From Siena, the best way to get to Rome is by train passing through Chiusi. Once you're in Rome, since Villa Borghese is a neighborhood, your best bet might be a taxi or the metro depending on your destination.

Hope this helps!

thank you Lourdes

we are excited to revisit Italy and spend some time in Tuscany. Will be interesting to see how much it reminds me of Napa, CA.

It will remind you of Napa a lot in some aspects, not at all in others :) Tuscany is very diverse!

From Lucca, you can explore Pisa, the Versilia, Barga and Bagni di Lucca in the Garfagnana valley and even go up along the coast into Lunigiana and the Magra valley. The castle and museum at Pontremoli are very interesting! You can reach all of these with train.

From Siena, you can visit San Gimignano, Volterra... the buses that go to these pass by Colle Val d'Elsa so you can see that too on the way. There are buses that go down into the Val d'Orcia - to Pienza and Montalcino would be a great bus trip. Check bus timetables at: http://www.busfox.com/timetable/

Hope you have a great time in Italy!
