My wife and I are planning to spend 9 days in Tuscany next year in May/June. After spending 3 days in Florence we would like to spend the remainning 6 days between Sienna,Sangiminiano, Chianti or Montepulciano. As we will not have a car we need some advice on where best to base ourselves.

Thanking yo,

Rob.

No car in Tuscany

Buongiorno,

As far as areas which are well connected with public transport, Siena is probably you best bet...the city of Siena. http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/siena/

However there are some agritourisms that are located close to public transport to make a few day trips enjoyable - two that I particularlly like are located in Mugello (I know its not an area you mentioned....but beautiful.)

San Gimignano is a beautiful little town - not as easy to move around in but you could look at Villa Alba which is close to the city center for meals: http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/villa-alba.html

Buon Viaggio,

I agree with Donna in that Siena is the best base when you don't have a car -- it is a great town that has maintained its feel of a smaller town.

To visit Chianti and Montepulcino - I'd recommend doing so with a tour. That way you don't have to worry about bus timetables. You can see what is available here:

To get to San Gimignano, there are plenty of buses from Siena that pass through Poggibonsi. You can see more info here: http://www.discovertuscany.com/san-gimignano/how-to-reach-san-gimignano.html

Enjoy the planning stage of the trip! ;)

Tip on places to stay + guidebook to read!

Hi, Rob!

I'm actually in the middle of a Europe/Italy trip, and I've used Airbnb exclusively for the last month -- my wife and I love it! I'd recommend to search the Airbnb site for places -- you can search for shared rooms, private rooms or entire apartments. Much cheaper than staying at a hotel, and you really get to live like a local -- and no, I'm not affiliated with Airbnb! =)

I also came across this guidebook for the Tuscany area that's free until tomorrow night (10/26). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B016J0O294/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_gVklwb1D0WFHN Might be worth a look -- you can't beat $0! =)

Have a great trip!
