5 days base in Firenze vs 3 days in Firenze and 2 in Countryside

My wife and I are traveling with another couple in June. 2 nights in Venice then train to Tuscany for 5 nights. We are trying to decide if we should spend all 5 nights in Florence and after the first couple of days of exploring the city take a private driver to explore the tuscan countryside or if we should relocate after three nights to the tuscan countryside and explore it from there? We love tasting wines and eating! We really don't want to drive around in a rental after tasting wine all day and we would prefer the efficiency and privacy of having a driver take us where we want to go rather than in a tour bus. My wife and I stayed at Castello Gabbiano 10 years ago and drove to Siena, we really enjoyed that but with friends we may prefer to have a driver. Also, is it practical to get transportation to Florence airport form the countryside or is it advisable to have our own car? Thank you

Base in Florence

Buongiorno,

You most certainly can enjoy Tuscany by staying in Florence and hiring a driver to take you around the countryside - and if you are truly out to enjoy the wine and great food, then I couldn't suggest a better way to do that.

As for accommodations, you might like looking at Villa Antea, https://www.visitflorence.com/florence-apartments/la-medicea-residence.html or even Antica Dimora Fiorentina

There are several places close by in the Florentine hills that you can read reviews on at our site, Viticcio, Torre a Cona and Villa Medici Lilliano are some of my favorites.

In this section we suggest several itineraries, have a look to see what your options are and the different areas to explore,

Don't forget to look into Arezzo as well as Lucca for wines (and great food!!)

Buon Viaggio,

Donna,

Those villas outside of Florence look amazing, the video for Villa Medicea is unreal... Since we are staying in Florence at least the first two nights, do you have any recommendations for similar caliber villas further south? That way we could have a base closer to Siena to facilitate visiting Montalcino and Montepulciano? Also, we have booked the Ad Astra in Florence, it gets great reviews, do you have any opinion on it?

Thanks again

Ross
