Tuscany in second half of September

Hello,

We (my husband and I) are visiting Tuscany between 19th and 30 September and would like to explore the area a bit more. We have already visited Florence and Siena and would now like to visit some of the other smaller / hill top towns and enjoy the scenery. I have an idea to split the time between 2 centres but maybe better only one? I have hear Val d'Orcia recommended a lot? Can you recommend an area / accommodation bearing in mind the following criteria :
1. Accommodation rural but not too far from a town (max 5 kms)
2. Price range - between 80 and 120 Euros per night
3. Possibility to self cater as well as eat an evening meal or restaurant nearby
4. Pool
5. We would like to do some independent walks or take part in group walks
6. Maybe do one cookery course

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

Kind regards
Vick H.

Ciao Vick,

Yes, 2 bases would be good for exploring Tuscan countryside and other parts better, dividing it up into 5/6 days each. I would suggest one base in the Val d'Orcia area, and you definitely want an apartment that will let you also do some cooking, as well as be near enough to towns to dine out. The other base closer to Florence, in the San Gimignao/San Miniato area. You can get an apartment for one, a B&B for the other and have both experiences as well ;)
You can also choose one base and still be close to the main sights across the area.

Some suggestions in the area south of Siena - to see the Val d'Orcia area, from Montalcino to Montelciano and Arezzo, Cortona:

Suggestions in area near San Gimignano - to see Chianti and its many hilltop towns, as well as the area north like Certaldo, San Miniato, Pisa and then south, Volterra, Colle Val d'Elsa, Monteriggioni:

Tuscany in the second half of September

Ciao Vick,

You could consider as a base the hill top town of Sovicille. It is a very characteristic, quiet and beautiful little town based near Siena (just 13 km far). Around Sovicille, you can find many rural accomodations (farm estates and holiday homes) from where you can enjoy the typical Tuscany scenery. There is a list of them on http://prolocosovicille.it/home.html.
Here are some examples of what places and hamlets you can possibly reach from Sovicille:

- The wonderful cloister of Torri, just 6 km far (open on Monday morning and Friday morning from 9 am to 12 pm)

- San Galgano abbey with little chapel where it is the famous sword plunged into the boulder, 20 km far

- Monteriggioni, 18 km far

Hope I've been helpful! Have a nice holiday :)
