Where to Stay? 2 Week Rental

We are 6-8 adults(artists, chefs, teacher, scientist, woodworkers) and are looking for suggestions for a two week stay and have been looking into Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena, Massa, Vernazza areas and cannot make up or minds. We are interested in relaxing, walking, cooking, wines, and taking in the local culture.
Day trips to hill towns and wineries would be great, no real agenda other than to relax and decompress. We will have two rental cars so getting around is no issue. We are not interested in group tours or crowds and are thinking of late September/October timeframe. It would be great to get up in the morning, walk to a cafe or bakery. Evenings explore and find cuisine and places to eat. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Bino

I would suggest the Siena or San Gimignano or in the countryside in between, just to be closer to the main sites in Chianti and the Val d'Orcia which make it just faster and easier to do those day trips, whatever you decide for each day. Probably more choices in Siena, especially as regards exploring the towns and its shops, bakeries, restaurants.

As far as period, you might enjoy October more when some of the crowds start getting to be less so that you have a more local flavor.
