the city center
Buongiorno Todd,
the historic city center of Florence is relatively small and with a 15 - 20-minute walk you can go in all directions and see many of the main attractions.
If you are in the city for a few days you may appreciate a hotel or B&B however if you are dedicating more than 3 or four days, a self catering apartment may be more suitable.
Have a look at the results on this link, they are a listing of homes, apartments and sometimes hotels which are listed by the owner - so you would deal directly with them for the best prices.

I have actually visited the first (David Apartment) and the 4th (Residence La Medicea) both are very close to the station - but not to close that you won't enjoy the liveliness and excitment of the city. And I have had friends that stayed at Monna Clara, and were very pleased with the economical yet clean accommodations.
Buon Viaggio,
Donna Denise
