Siena daytrips and getting to Rome

Hello - we will be in Florence for 4 days, then Siena for 5 or 6 days in early July with kids aged 10 and 15. We will not have a car.

Can you please suggest day trips we can take from Florence and Siena by bus or train?

We also wonder if anyone can recommend a scenic route from Siena to Rome with one or two nights of stopovers in nice towns or villages that we can also do by train or bus.

Thank you.

Tuscany Vacation plan

Dear NancyB,
Your vacation plan to visit Tuscany sounds perfect!
Since you are going to use public transport, though, I suggest you base yourself in Florence for 4 nights and maybe just 1 night in Siena to visit other villages like San Gimignano and Volterra, an imposing medieval village on top of a hill offering never ending views, that I highly recommend visiting.
From Florence or Siena you can easily move around Tuscany by train or by bus with no problems at all. From Florence, you can easily reach Greve by bus; the area of the famous Chianti wine, that you cannot absolutely miss exploring. While it is difficult to move around Chianti, you can still enjoy its essence from Greve. You may find this link useful: http://www.chianti.com/
From Florence's SMN train station, you can also quickly reach Pisa, at about an hour's train ride from Florence. Pisa and Lucca can both be fitted into one day, being 2 small art cites.
You can check train timetables at this link: www.trenitalia.com

Feel free to post any additional questions you may have,

Have a nice day and enjoy your Tuscan vacation!
