Hi Hi,

We are planning to spend 3 days in Florence arriving from Rome by car and continue heading toward Venice.

Do you have good recommendation best route to drive from ROME to FLORENCE and what we can do at FLORENCE?

I see few postings that it's not necessary to drive in FLORENCE?
Also, we are open for advise to visit outskirt in TUSCANY areas along the way up to VENICE..

I would appreciate good advise and tips from you for driving around in FLORENCE..

Cheers,

we don't recommend driving in Florence

Ciao Elvis,

The fastest way to go from Rome to Florence is to take the autostrada A1, the main motorway running North-South through Italy. It is a toll road, with service stations along the way. The best exit is Firenze Sud coming from Rome.

If you aren't in a hurry and want to see a bit of the Tuscan countryside as you come up, getting a chance to stop and do some sightseeing along the way, I recommend taking the A1 up from Rome, getting off at the Valdichiana exit and head towards SIENA. If you want, you could spend a few hours just walking around this beautiful Medieval city, then take the Chiantigiana road (SS222) from Siena to Florence driving through Chianti. You can either stop along the way or keep going - this way you get to see a bit of the Tuscan countryside.

There is a lot of traffic in Florence and the entire historical center is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) where only cars with permits can go in. Fines are really high so you absolutely don't want to drive into this limited area, which is obviously where all the main sights are. But Florence is small, so plan on parking your car somewhere and not using it all to move around within Florence and just walk or take public buses to move around. You can find more information on our section moving around in Florence.
There are car parks which cost around 18 euro per day, but if you don't have a hotel yet, you can also look for one that is outside the "ring" where the center is and which has parking spaces where you can leave your car. You can look for hotels, check availability and book online through Booking.com.

For things to see in Florence, check out the various areas of our guide Visit Florence.

As you leave Florence toward Venice, you could drive through the Mugello valley and visit some of the towns and villages along the way before getting back on the A1 toward Bologna and then on to Venice on the A13.
For more info on what to see and do on the official website for the Mugello Valley.
