We want to rent a car for the day to explore Tuscany, not sure which area yet, but wanted to know the best place to rent to avoid the ZTL zones. We are a 5 minute walk from the SMN station so we could hop a train to get closer to another area before renting a car.

Your suggestions for what areas to visit by car will be very helpful as well.

If you're a 5 minutes walk from SMN rail station, you could look for a car rental in the surroundings, there are many, take a look at this page wherer you'll find a map and other useful suggestions: http://www.visitflorence.com/florence-car-rental/

I understand your need to avoid ZTL areas, but you may ask the rental agency for suggestions and traffic tips to get out the center without getting lost! Otherwise you could hop on the train and get to the airport of Florence, where you'll find another car rental. There you'll be outside Florence center and close to the highway leading to Lucca, Viareggio, Versilia, as well as the A1 highway to Mugello, just to mention another destination.
If you want to start visiting the Chianti area from Florence, take the A1 highway and exit at Firenze Certosa or Firenze SUD for starting exploring the country area.

The best areas to visit by car are those that you'll hardly reach by train or bus, like Chianti - car in this case is a MUST for touring all the best locations in the countryside and stop whenever you want to taste wine and local food - Mugello, southern Tuscany (all the Maremma zone, the Costa degli Etruschi).
If you rent a car for just a day trip, choose those destinations that are within a 2 hour drive distance: consider you also need to return the car before the agency closes, so maybe Chianti, Mugello and the southern countryside of Tuscany are the best locations.

Have a nice trip :)
