Hi there,
My bf and I are travelling to Europe for the first time. We'll be in Italy from August 30-Sept 8 and then Paris, France for another week.

We're spending 4 nights in Rome then 3 nights in Tuscany then 2 nights in Venice with remainder of the time in Paris for another 8 days.

What can we do in Tuscany? We are planning on heading over to Florence from Rome via train in morning. We are planning on Florence as our "base". That gives us 2 more days there. We are doing some looking around and thinking Siena/Pisa/Chianti/Val d'orcia. What do you guys recommend we do in the 2 days?

How do we get there as we will not be renting a car?

We want to do some sightseeing and also just enjoying the countryside :)

Do you think we should just join a tour? Any recommendations?

Also, you think we should extend to 4 nights and cut Venice to 1 night leaving for Paris in the afternoon to make it 1.5 days?

Thanks!

Any help appreciated :)

Hi.

Siena and Pisa are two beautiful destinations with amazing sights and can easily be reached by train direct from Florence in an hour or so (Trenitalia - the Italian train company has a helpful website for time-tables and prices). They deserve a day at least each to be visited properly.

Chianti and Val d'Orcia are also day-trips and should really be visited by car as they can be fairly remote country areas; the country-side is stunning but you need to be free to drive around the hills to enjoy it. If you are not going to hire a car, I would advise you to visit Florence as thoroughly as possible and, perhaps, schedule a day out in either Pisa or Siena.

Florence has a great amount of things to be seen and if you are staying for two days only, you will have to make a selection: it could be a good idea to join a "hop on hop off" sightseeing tour on one of the special open top buses whose websites you can easily find online, or hire a good tourist guide for the day; both solutions will allow you to see the outdoor and indoor attractions (a great deal of fantastic things on Florence are indoors in palaces or museums). If you are into art museums, you should at least go to the Uffizi where the most amazing renaissance painting collections are hosted; you can book online here: www.uffizi.org.

Hope this helps. Have a great time in Florence.

Like Elena has already commented, you have to dedicate some time to seeing Florence itself. How about 3 nights in Rome, 4 nights in Florence/Tuscany and 2 nights in Venice? ;-)
That should give you an extra day for exploring Tuscany from Florence.

From Florence, you can easily see Siena and Pisa without a car. The Val d'Orcia and Chianti really do require your own means of transport...... unless you take advantage of organized tours!
Since your time is limited and you might not be able to change the 4th night in Rome, you could get to see a lot with a tour or two from Florence - how about this one or this one?
