Hi!
I am planning a 2 days self drive tour around Tuscany in October.
Here is my plan. Pick up a rental car at Florence and drive in to Chianti via SR2. I wish to stop at some small villages and wineries for wine tasting. After lunch I will head to val d'orcia and stay overnight. The next day i plan to go Siena for a day trip, then drop off the rental car at Siena and head to Rome by train.
Do you think this is doable if i add San Gimignano in to my 2 days itinerary?
Is there any direct train from Siena to Rome?
Need some advice and opinion.

Thanks

You could add San Gimignano to your first day. Head down the SR2 (called the Cassia road here) and once in Poggibonsi head to S.G.

Before Poggibonsi... you can visit the beautiful, new Cantinetta Antinori on your way down, as you'll be passing right in front of it near Bargino - you can book your visit ahead of time online: http://antinorichianticlassico.it/
I'd suggest mid-morning so that you can arrive and have lunch in San Gimignano. You'll have a few hours - I recommend visiting the Duomo in SG and climbing to the top of the Torre Grosso for great views!
Then head down to Val d'Orcia before sunset, you want to see the landscapes before sun down, maybe enjoy sunsets as you're driving ;)

If after Siena you're heading down to Rome, then know there are no direct trains - you have to change in Chiusi. Check timetables online at www.trenitalia.com.
A better alternative from Siena might be to take the bus - check the timetables here: http://www.sena.it/
