12 Day Trip (Florence, Rome but where next??)

Hi, we'll be flying to Pisa next month for the start of a 12 day trip (travelling between stops by train).

So far our plan is:

2 nights Florence
4 nights Rome
4 nights Follonica / Elba area
1 night Pisa

Would really appreciate some advice regarding whether or not this will allow us to get the most out of our 1st trip to Tuscany? Main question is around our proposed 3rd stop on the west coast. Is this a nice area or would we be better substituting this by heading north from Rome back into central Tuscany?

Many Thanks!

getting the most out of Tuscany

Buongiorno,

Your time line looks fine -

Elba and Follonica are a great area to visit ... but when you say getting the most out of Tuscany it really depends on what you are looking for. That area will definitely give you the beautiful beaches but if you are looking for some of the more traditional aspects of Tuscany you might appreciate staying a little more inland.

2 nights Florence
3 nights Rome
3 nights Siena - where you can do several daytrips without a car.
2 nights Follonica / Elba area
1 night Pisa

Buon Viaggio,

Donna Denise

If you're traveling by train, then Follonica is easier to do than Elba, which requires more planning as far as trains + bus travel to get around - doable, just requires more planning.

If you want to include coast and beach, you can certainly take train from Rome along the coast and plan a stop in Follonica or further up along the coast - Castiglioncello, San Vincenzo or Tirrenia -- then do Pisa as you head back inland. Siena is a good central area and great if you're depending on public transport and can do day trips from there (or group tours into the Val d'Orcia where bus travel is more difficult).
