Default Holiday accomodation in a small town or village with good public transport

We plan to either fly/train to Bolongna for 2-3 nights in September 2017, then would like to spend a further 10 days relaxing and sight seeing somewhere in Tuscany. We would ideally like to find a rental, in a town with good amenities where we can do our own thing, BBQs, snooze, read etc, and shop locally for food, and maybe visit the odd restaurant/bar but then be close enough to travel to places for sightseeing probably every other day, depending on distances. We want to use public transport, as driving for us isnt an option. As we have only ever visited Lake Garda, many years ago, its all new to us, so we dont have a pre plan of where we'd like to go after Bologna. We've tried to research this, but finding the base, with our limited knowledge is quite difficult. Theres just the two of us. Is this possible or should we forget it?! Any help/ideas would be very welcome. Thanks
