best base for 5 nights in Tuscany

My husband, baby and I are travelling to Rome for three days then staying five full days in Tuscany. Should we take the train from Rome and then rent a car closer or rent and drive from Rome?

We are planning to visit Sienna, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, and would like two other locations to see on the other two days. We have already been to Florence. What would be a good base to stay at with the towns I listed and what you suggest. We want to the base to be in the center of the town where we could find restaurants for breakfast/dinner but is easy to drive into/out every day and convenient to the places we visit.

Thanks!!

Accommodations in a town center

Buongiorno,

It is certainly lovely to stay in a small town center and wander the streets, or head out to a local restaurant by foot!

I have personally visited these two places - and both are marvelous! They are located in a fairly good place for enjoying both the south of Tuscany (Siena and San Gimignano) --- you should really stop in Montepulciano on your way up from Rome --- and even a few places to the north like Lucca or the Garfagnana.

I am also going to suggest that you look at these three places which though not in a town center, off meals on the site and offer a lovely setting:
