We have narrowed down to two places to stay in Tuscany and need help making a decision
1 Locanda dell Artista in San Gimignano or 2. La Locanda in Volpaia in Chianti.
Any suggestions!
Personally I have no experience with either of those accommodations - but I could suggest that since they are located in two different areas:
La Volpaia is in Chianti - and not just any Chianti - but Chianti Classico, so you will be surrounded by lots and lots of vineyards. You are about an hour away from Florence and Siena and the road is very panoramic - though sometimes a bit curvy. There are several small towns but I sometimes feel they are a (tiny) bit touristy. From here you can easily travel to places like Montepulciano, Cortona and Montalcino in just a little over an hour.
San Gimignano is a bit (but not much) closer to Florence and Siena and promises great scenery...but perhaps not as many vineyards, in compensation I feel there are more characteristic small towns. San Gimignano offers several interesting day trip opportunities without driving far.
