Hello,
I've been trying to avoid squishing too many things into short amounts of time for my Europe trip but I fear I have been undone by what Tuscany has to offer! (Having not yet been I think I will definitely be back!)
Anyway, it will be my first trip to Italy and I have 5 full days to work with for Tuscany (+ 2 half days) -not enough! I was thinking 2 days Florence, 1 day Lucca and Pisa, 1 day Sienna and San Gimignano. Hows does that look so far? Am I trying to do too much?
I can't decide where to base myself. I think I would enjoy staying in a smaller town but not sure it makes sense. Have been considering northern Chianti but then it could really limit all my day trips. Should I consider cutting something out?
I am interested in seeing the countryside, castles, art and food! I will be travelling solo and on a backpacker budget. I like the idea of cycling round the countryside or horse riding. I don't want to hire a car which I realise restricts me a bit.
Any suggestions for where I could base myself? I will be coming from Rome via train (no tickets book yet) and then leaving to Venice. With the rail network would it be possible/east enough to the following:
Oct 13: Rome to Sienna (1/2 day to see Sienna)
14: Sienna (Day trip to San Gimignano)
15: Sienna to Florence (spend most of the day in Sienna)
16: Florence (Daytrip to Pisa and Lucca)
17: Florence
18: Florence
Oct 19: Florence to Venice
Or is there somewhere I could stay just out of Florence that has a more country feel but is reasonably accessible? I probably would rather just having once base. Am I asking for the impossible?! I also consider staying in Lucca but felt like it cut Sienna off too much.
I know the obvious choice is Florence right?
Sorry for the rambling post.. as you can see I can't decide what to do!
