Leisurely 10 days in Tuscany

My wife and I are finally able to visit Italy. Neither of us are the touristy type, and much prefer to enjoy the local flavor than try to cram in all the sights. We are flying into Rome and would like to drive around Tuscany to enjoy the food, the countryside, and small towns. My grandparents were from Massa Marittima, so we may spend a day there, as well as a day in Florence. We would also want to reserve the last day of our trip to visit Rome before we fly back home. We will be there the first two weeks of May. Any suggestions on places to stay and car rental?

Enjoying the local color

Buongiorno,

Massa Marittima? Fantastic. Southern Tuscany is a great area to just wander around with no specific goals. It is a bit less touristy than many other areas so it has a tendency to be a bit more authentic.

If you don't need to get into Florence, then I would pick up the car in Rome (BUT avoid the center look for a place in north Rome on the outskirts close to the Autostrada) or train it up to Orvieto and pick the car up there.

Here are a few itineraries you can read through which will give you some ideas of places to visit while driving around.

I spent last summer exploring some of this area - you might find some useful ideas in this article

I agree, use the Maremma area as a base for your stay -- look places to stay here: https://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/maremma/
and then do day trip to Florence and to Siena and around Val d'Orcia. Two weeks will be perfect to spend time enjoying the area without being in a hurry!

I would recommend at least 2-3 days at the end to see Rome too so that you also see it without being in a rush.
