Renting a car in Tuscany

Hi there!

We are four friends travelling to Italy in July. We are going to start in Rome for 3 days and then travel to Florence. We were thinking of taking the train from Rome to San Gimignano, renting a car from there, then taking a day trip to some of the other small towns, spending another night in SG before taking the train to Florence.

Do you think this is a good idea and do you have any other suggestions? We are really excited about this trip! :D

It's a great idea to plan to see the Tuscan countryside before heading to Florence - BUT - San Gimignano has no train station and is not easy to reach from Rome WITHOUT first stopping in Florence.

I would suggest to take train from Rome to Chiusi and rent from there, driving from there to SG and then following on with your plan. You can search for car rentals and read more tips through this page:

Thanks for the advice!

I found a place to rent a car in San Gimignano. We are thinking about taking the train from Rome to Poggibonsi and then the bus from Poggibonsi to SG. Staying the night in SM and then driving to Monterrigioni, Siena and Montalcino the next day, Spending the night in Montalcino and driving back to SG the next day before going to FLorence.
