I am not feeling confident in hiring a car in Italy. Please advise which villages we can visit in the Tuscany Region by Train and or Bus. I would also love to go into the umbria region being gubbio, Perugia Citerna Assisi would this be possible within 3 to 4 days. where should we base ourselves to see these areas
thankyou so much for your time in assisting. :)

Ciao auskim123,

That's ok, not everyone feels up to driving in a foreign country... and driving after long flights isn't always easy either or recommended if you are not rested!

There are many towns you can visit by train or a short bus ride away. How many days total will you have in Tuscany? You should use either Florence or Siena as your base, and then use the train and bus to do day trips to Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Arezzo and Siena, if you're staying in Florence (and vice-versa). This will already mean 4 days at least.

Is the 3-4 days in Umbria in addition? I think Perugia would be the best base from which you can then take buses or train to the other areas.

In Tuscany, I'd definitely stay in Florence or Siena: to get started, browse through here for Florence and Siena center.

Post any other questions you might have!

Thankyou Lourdes

I am wanting to know what transport will be required to get to some of the hill top towns in Tuscany. Are there buses that go to Val d orcia , Chianti, Cortona.

In umbria are these areas reachable by bus and or train orvieto, gubbio citerna.

we will be spending around 10 days to visit these regions:)

There are buses from Siena to the Val d'Orcia - you can see schedules here:
http://www.trainspa.it/train04/extraurbano.pdf
there are some into Chianti too, such as Castellina and Radda.

From Florence to Greve, you can take bus
line 365 - http://www.acvbus.it/orari/365.pdf

The thing is that you'll see the buses aren't very convenient at all to these areas, but they do exist - you just need to carefully plan your days. There is a train station called Montepulciano Stazione from which you can catch a bus to Montepulciano - it comes up in the first pdf I linked above.

Cortona you can reach by train -

Don't know about Umbria - a whole different region but I'd expect there should be buses from Perugia. I'd rather tell you I don't know than to give you wrong info, sorry!
