Day trip to Siena

Hello,

We are staying 2 nights in Certaldo then moving on to a location in/near Montepulciano (but haven't decided where) for the next 2 nights. We would like to go to Siena in between that. Is Siena the same as Florence where you cannot drive in the city? Which would be our best option in ease of transportation?

1. Take a day trip to Siena from Certaldo
2. Drive to Siena with a car rental
3. Take a day trip to Siena from Montepulciano area

If a day trip is best, would we be taking a train or bus? And what is the lastest time the trains/buses run so we could spend the whole day in Siena?

Lastly, any recommendations of agriturismos near Montepulciano? Thank you!

You cannot drive inside the city walls -- they are red brick walls and are easy to identify if you're driving into. There are many parking lots around the city walls, some barely inside the walls but with roads being one-way and signs directing you to the parking lot. So I would drive to Siena and then head to one of these lots and park there, it would be the easiest solution whether you choose to visit on your way between Certaldo and Val d'Orcia or on the other days at either location.
I highly recommend a whole day there, so maybe the day trip would be better ;)

You can find details on the parking lots here: http://www.discovertuscany.com/siena/tourist-info/parking-lots-in-siena.html

As far as recommendations on places to stay, take a look here: http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/montepulciano/
You would really like Agriturismo Le Caggiole, but also search looking at the map and see where they are (if you want to stay in the countryside).

Thank you so much for your help! Le Caggiole is exactly what we are looking for. I submitted my request. Hopefully, they have something available for us! :D

Hi Lourdes,

Unfortunately, they are all booked for our dates. Is there another place like that you can recommend? Anywhere in the the Val D'Orcia area will work. I've been going through the list in the link you sent me but i'm not finding anything like it.

If you're not particularly partial to staying right around Montepulciano, we've enjoyed stays in San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza - take a look at these:

If you want the agriturismo, I'd also recommend taking a look at Podere Cunina - the first one on this list:

You didn't mention dates, so keep in mind some will rent only by the week during high season and shorter stays in the low season.
