One base or two?

We are planning on renting a car in Chiusi and spending 5 days in the Tuscan countryside before returning the car and spending 3 days in Florence. Right now we have a place booked in Montepulciano for all 5 nights. The first 3 days we will spend around Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza and Siena. Then we want to spend a day in San Gimignano/Volterra and the last day in the Chianti region. Is it best to stay all 5 days in Montepulciano or should we spend the last 2 nights further north? I hate the idea of another hotel change but it would cut down on doing so much driving. Thoughts?

More than one base

Buongiorno -

My personal preference and thus suggestion is to have two bases.

Montepulciano and the cities you mentioned (also have a look at visiting Chiusi, Cetona, Sarteano and Chianciano) will definitely take up three lovel days.

Then drive into Chianti and stay at a B&B and take one day to visit San gimignano & Volterra and another to enjoy Chianti. Have a look at these two places in San Donato in Poggio - both of which would put you in a place that kind of straddles Chianti East and West - (the links in the article will have you book DIRECT with the owners, no middle man no commissions.)

With a base here, you can visit places like (many of these articles will give you a sample itinerary with times):
San Donato
Impruneta
San Casciano
Poggibonsi

Buon Viaggio,
