5 Days in Tuscany without Florence

Hello,

My husband and I are visiting Italy for the second time this summer. We will have already spent time in Florence and then rent a car and stay in Tuscany for 5 nights. We have been to Pisa, San Gig, and Siena for day trips on our last trip. Where is a good place to use as a base? We would like to visit Chianti, Montepulciano, Montalcino, and maybe some other towns. We would like to take our time and explore and also spend some time tasting the wines of the region. Thank you.

Wonderful! You can either divide the 5 days and spend 2 days in Chianti, maybe pretty central so you can roam around wine country and do wine tastings (such as Castellina, Radda or Gaiole) and then the rest of the 3 days in southern Tuscany, anywhere between Siena and Montepulciano in the area called Val d'Orcia. While in the Val d'Orcia, you can also take your time to explore the wine areas as well as visit Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia, as well as the Abbey of Sant'Antimo near Montalcino. If you get the chance, maybe include some time at the hot springs in San Fillipo! :D
If you have the time (but I don't think so, since you want to take it easy), you can extend the area to include either Cortona or Arezzo (Cortona isn't too far from Montepulciano, once you're in that area).

As for a base, I suggest you take a look at: http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/val-d-orcia/ for the Val d'Orcia and http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/chianti/ for Chianti.
A farmhouse apartment or room that rents by the day (as opposed to by the week) is what you're looking for (ones with daily rates should work, but you'll need to contact them directly for availability).
